Top 5 Reasons Your Pool Pump Isn’t Working

If your pool pump isn’t working, it can be a real pain. Not only is it frustrating, but it can also be expensive to fix. However, if you recently had a pool inspection done by Inspect360, you probably have some potential fixes noted in your report. Still, there are five other reasons your pool pump might not be working correctly.

1. A Loose Pump Lid

One of the most common reasons pool pumps stop working is because the pump lid is loose. The pump lid needs to be tightly secured in order to create a seal that prevents water from leaking out. If the pump lid is loose, water can leak out and cause the pool pump to overheat. In addition, a loose pump lid can also cause the pool pump to lose suction and eventually stop working.

2. Faulty O-Rings or Gaskets

Swimming pool pumps are essential for circulating pool water and keeping it clean. However, over time, pool pumps can become damaged and stop working properly. A common culprit for such issues is a faulty O-ring or gasket. These components are responsible for sealing the pump's impeller chamber and preventing water from leaking out. If an O-ring or gasket is damaged, it can cause water to leak from the pump, leading to reduced performance and potentially damaging the pump.

3. Air Leak

Another possible reason your pool pump isn't working is an air leak. If there is an air leak in the system, it can cause the pump to lose suction and overheat. First, check for an air leak and ensure all the connections are tight. If they are, then check the pump lid O-ring to see if it needs to be replaced. If you still can't find the source of the leak, you may need to replace the entire pool pump.

4. Blockage in the Pumping System

Blockages in your pool pump system are common, especially during times of heavy use. However, you shouldn't ignore a potential clog. Debris can also build up in the hoses, preventing water from flowing freely. To fix this problem, you'll need to clean out all of the pool's filters and baskets. You may also need to flush the hoses to remove any built-up debris. If you have a saltwater pool, you'll also need to check the salt level in the water. If it's too low, it can prevent the pool pump from working properly.

5. The Motor Is Going Bad

Finally, a bad motor is our last common issue with a pool pump. There are a few signs that this may be the case, such as unusual noises coming from the motor or a decrease in water flow. If you notice either of these things, it's important to have the pump checked by a professional as soon as possible. In many cases, the motor can be repaired or replaced, and the pump will be back up and running in no time. However, if the damage is too extensive, you may need to invest in a new pool pump.
